Dublin: Clarke and Son 1881. Compiled from the Acts of Parliament and other Authentic Sources. 13 by 8.5 cms 36 pp. black linen backed covers, worn with some some professional repair to title page. A fragile survivor. "The tables in common use contain many errors and obscurities and much that is antiquated or otherwise needless. By confounding local with general customs they frequently mislead." This represents an ongoing effort at national standarisation. The last 5 pages are on metric weights and measures. £15.00

3641. Broadsheet: The Battle of the Navvies. By one of the Carpenters.

Belfast: c1864. 28.5 x 14cm. A broadsheet containing a fourteen- verse Orange ballad commemorating an incident in the Belfast Riots of 1864. It is likely to have been printed fairly close to the events, probably mid to 1860's. "We burnt the Bully Beggarman-for him our scorn expressed, and at the gate of Friars bush we laid him down to rest; and from ten thousand people an indignant cry arose, that we were crushed by Government, while petted were our foes" Cf. Bardon, J. Belfast a History pp.111-115. It has been folded in four with a little wear to one edge but otherwise in very good clean condition. £42.00

There is some spotting on some illustrations and the mid-booklet illustrations are loose. Generally in very good condition and quite scarce. The military curfew of 1970 in the Lower Falls was carried out in some degree of desperation, in difficult circumstances, and like many such measures predictably had a highly counter productive effect. This booklet gives a well written and documented local account of the experience and its effects. Curfews were never attempted again, which in itself is interesting. £30.00

The Ministry of Public Security Belfast Edition April 1941. A folding leaflet of six pages, 15 by 8.5 cms. It details all that is needed to prepare and cope with an air raid on Belfast. It is presumably a standard text specifically adapted to the City. It is in mint condition and very scarce. The City was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe on Apr. 7th 8th and 15th 1941, then again on the 4th May 1941, leaving over 1000 dead, 56,000 homes damaged or destroyed and over 15,000 homeless. Famously Fire-Engines from the Republic attended to help with the fires. £15.00

The folding map indicates all the railways, including narrow-gauge, north of Dublin. Decorative covers show girl in red cloak and green scarf. Several small edge tears to the covers have been professionally repaired with archival tape, and the spine has an off-white binding strip. £25.00

In very good condition. An early nineteenth century Belfast printing. Palmer 1741-1813 was a Minister in Hackney in London. This printing was done at the request of several of the most eminent Ministers of the General Synod of Ulster and the Presbytery of Antrim. Note that this is only the Preface to the original book, with the addition by the printer of a two page postscript bring the history of Protestant Dissenters up to date particularly in relation to Ireland.
