Two sectional maps, one inch equals eight miles, North and South, dissected, coloured printed by Bacon, both in red maroon covers, along with a separate index and route guide to map, all in a maroon slip case with gilt title, the boards and slip case have some old light water staining but the maps are most attractive and were expensive to buy when new. Showing Railways, Ministry of Transport first and second class roads with their numbers, principal new roads and by-passes, mileage between towns, Aerodromes, heights of towns above sea level etc. £20.009763. Scale 19 miles to one inch. Inset are larger plans of London and Surburbs and South Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is a handsome map which would look good hanging in a wall. It is an advertising map for The Distiller's Company Ltd. Manufacturer's of the celebrated "D.C.L." Yeast and "D.C.L." Malt Extract. Red dots on the map indicate the location of the 15 Distilleries owned by the Company. Their advertising title is to the upper right. The map is in very good condition. £75.0020001. Places served and General Informatiom, list of routes, particulars of times and fares and places served. This edition has the tipped in scarce Curfew Order giving the times of last cars from Termini and City Centre. In very good condition apart from the handwritten 1921 date on the cover almost new. Scarce with the Curfew details. 1921-22 were the severe years of the Irish Civil War and the trams became an object of direct attack from the IRA. The Curfew was introduced in April 1921. "Offenders against the order were in extreme cases liable to be shot, a situation that surely encouraged its observance!" £25.0021025. London: William Darton 58 Holburn Hill 16th April 1823 19 x 13 cm. opening to 76 x 64cm linen backed, dissected, hand coloured folding map. Scale 0ne inch to 15 miles. There is a small light stain in St Georges Channel, and to part of the map's eastern edge, in the North Sea, minor spots in Ayrshire, and a tiny loss in Cornwall west of Truro, otherwise in very good condition. It was clearly intended to have a slipcase for travelling purposes, but this is no longer present. This is a handsome map of pre Railway Britain and would look splendid framed. £95.004716. The city's fifteen Wards are shown in various colours, and the tramways are shown in red. At some time the perimeter of the map has been bound with sellotape, now removed. The Belfast Holywood & Bangor Railway is shown as such. The BH&BR was incorpoated in 1860 and amalgamated into the B&CDR in 1884. £75.009754. The boundary dispute lines between New Brunswick and Maine along with the arbitration decision of the King of Holland as Arbitrator in 1831 are shown. The dispute was not settled until 1842. With insets of the Vicinity of Cincinnati; of Albany; of the Falls of Niagara; of New York; of Charleston; of Baltimore and Washington; of New Orleans, of Philadelphia; and the Vicinity of Boston, with original hand-colouring in outline. With a folded Index, listing, steam boat and canal routes, a statistical table, heights of mountains, length of canals, railroads, different classes of inhabitants, whites, free Blacks, Slaves. Original light brown leather roan, lettered in gilt on the front board with narrow gilt edging to the boards.The gilding is very faded, a new matching leather spine has been professionally relaid. Roads are labelled in the key as, "suitable for two way convoy traffic, one way convoy traffic, and light convoy traffic, as well as "generally unsuitable for military traffic. Road classification as at 1.1.1942. These wartime maps appear to be scarce £15.0018622. Weller, Edward: Bacon's Map of The Environs of Belfast. London: C. W. Bacon n.d. c. 1870. 17.5 x 10 cm. linen backed, hand coloured map in green boards, partly embossed, and with gilt blocked title. Minor wear to boards otherwise in good condition.This is not a very common map. Weller 1819-1884 was on of the first cartographers to produce maps using lithography. After his death many plates were sold on to Bacon who continued to sell them. This map first appeared c.1863 but this map is a little later including several new railway lines. The Ulster Railway is so identified but it ceased in1876. This is a map from the early 1870's republished by Bacon after 1884 as far as we can see. £45.00 |
