Maps6356. : Land Utilisation Survey of Northern Ireland Belfast: O.S.N.I. July 1947. L.U.S. One-Inch Series Belfast Sheet 7. Folding Map linen backed. In very good condition. These land utilisation maps are now quite scarce. £15.009863. : Plan of Dieppe with the New Fortifications and Projected Works. no date circa 1800. A single plan of Dieppe, an original map from the 18th century, 21 by 31 cms. mounted behind glass and framed (34 by 44 cms) in very good condition. This is an English produced map, text in English. The fortifications are well delineated and are those presumably of Louis XIV ? £50.009691. : Presbyterian Map of Ireland. Belfast Marcus Ward 1886. (Modern Copy). A modern - twentieth century - black and white copy. A Single sheet, 100 by 70cms. rolled, showing a map of Ireland with various historical vignettes and view on either side, with inset plans of Belfast and Londonderry. Shows churches/congregations, a repaired tear on top and bottom otherwise in very good condition. No scale given, card covers, the top right corner of the cover is a little damaged, otherwise in good condition. £20.0012499. : The Camp at Chobham, and Aldershot Heath with the roads and adjacent country. London: Standidge & Co. n.d. c. 1853? A folded paper lithographed map. 39 by 47 cms. The area covered is from Finchampstead and Crondall in the west to Chertsey in the east, Wokingham in the north and Farnham, Guildford in the south. Partly hand coloured it has a beautiful hand coloured vignette looking down on the encampment. The railways are clearly delineated and named. There is no cover for the map but it is in very good condition, and clearly shows this area before the expansion of the various military establishments. An unusual map. The Camp held 8000 men and 1200 horses. Murray's Handbook for Surrey 1865 tells us that, "It was on the heath n. of Chobham that a temporary encampment was formed from April to August 1853. This was little more than "a grand military pic-nic," but it was sufficient to prove the neccessity of establishing a more permanent school for field operations, where officers might learn to handle large bodies of men, and where the men might learn to rough it, and to draw more upon their own ingenuity for comfort. This has been supplied at Aldershot. The Chobham camp was established along the high land bordering on Burrow Hill. The artillery was billetted at Long Cross; the headquarters were on a part of Black Hill; Staple Hill served as a reconnoitreing station...." Punch described conditions as miserable due to damp. Queen Victoria paid a visit to it in June, preparatory to troops going off to the Crimea. It was a major tourist attraction, particularly to Londoners, and became a title for various musical items, a one act farce and a childrens book. Glasgow: William Collins Sons & Co. n.d. c.1882. 25 by 17.5 cms. 46 maps +42 pp. marbled endpapers, covers worn and rubbed, internally very good, bears owner's signature dated 1882, most maps are double page, 40 are modern age and six cover the ancient world, a few maps at the beginning show a little wear but most are very good. Turko 1950. 17 by 12 cms folding double sided plan of the city, 1:15000 scale, and environs, 1:100000 scale, along with street index and brief guide. Text in Finnish, Swedish and English. London: 1937. 15 by 15 cms, unfolding to 45 by 60 cms. comprising a map of the Coronation route with, on the reverse, the arrangements by bus, underground, cars, taxicabs and trains for the day. Two sectional maps, one inch equals eight miles, North and South, dissected, coloured printed by Bacon, both in red maroon covers, along with a separate index and route guide to map, all in a maroon slip case with gilt title, the boards and slip case have some old light water staining but the maps are most attractive and were expensive to buy when new. Contemporaneously joined sheets. Scale 1 inch = 3.95 miles 1cm =2.5 Km. Messina is identified as Italy Sheet J 33/5 1st edition. Compiled and drawn at WO 1938. Heliographed and printed at OS 1939. With Air Information as supplied by the Air Ministry Feb. Mar. 1939. They almost certainly formed a wall map in a wartime operations context. They came from the estate of Commodore C.A.R. Shillington CB VDR RNVR. There is some wear from wartime usage, folded as it came to us. Shows land and water aerodromes, landing grounds, seaplane mooring areas, airship bases, airports, radio communications, etc. Curiously the reference table showing comparative city sizes lists only German ones, from Berlin through Cologne, Bonn, Coblenz. Obviously a lot of hasty mapmaking was taking place in 1938/39. A nice wartime souvenir map. £55.009784. Some edge tears and wear, two tears at top extending into map needing repair but no loss, pinholes, needing a bit of overall attention. Obviously used in a wartime operations context, probably to cover part of the Allied operations in western Germany in 1944/45, probably just as it was when taken off the wall. These maps have been joined together, contemporaneously, as a continuous roll covering the South Coast of England from Southampton to Dungeness. They are paper, (sheets 132 and 133) and linen backed, (sheets 134, 135). The first two are marked War Revision 1940, the second two are older 1931, presumably not yet revised. They almost certainly formed a wall map in a wartime operations context. They came from the estate of Commodore C.A.R. Shillington CB VDR RNVR. There is some wear, two small repaired holes, and a linen backing is detatching at the end but is perfectly restorable. A nice wartime souvenir map. £55.009765.
