16865. Dharmakumarsinhji, R.S.: Birds of Saurashtra India With Additional Notes on The Birds of Kutch and Gujerat.

Saurashtra: published by R.S. Dharmakumarsinhji, 1955. liii+561 pp. 29.5 x 21 cm. Foreword by Major-General H. Williams. illustrated with 33 coloured plates, 51 photographic plates, and 16 maps. Endpaper maps. Gold-blocked brown boards. A little rubbing from shelfwear to upper edge of boards, but overall in very good condition. No d.w. Dedication to Major General H. Williams by the author on the endpaper and half title dated, 14.7.1955. The author's parents were the Maharaji and Maharani of Bhavnagar. There are a number of loose inserts. First a two-page handwritten letter from the author to Major Williams, accompanying the presentation of the book to him. This contains various comments on the difficulties of identifying birds in the area by other ornithologists. Also a typed copy letter from Maharaj Dharamkumar Sinhji of Poona thanking the author for the book. Also four Journal offprints. "Some observations on the small Indian Pratincole (Glareola Lactea Temminck) and some other waders breeding in Bhavnagar Gujarat", by R.S. Dharmakumarsinhji, March 1964, signed and dedicated in writing by the author to Lt. Gen. Sir H Williams. "The Whitebellied Sea Eagles of Karwar" by the same author, and inscribed by him to H.Williams. "The Satpura Trend as an Ornithogeographical Highway " by Salim Ali, signed by him, and "Ornithology in Britain Fifty Yeatrs Ago" by H.G.Alexander and signed by him in a dedication to H. Williams. Williams had a distinguished career in the British Indian Army and stayed on after 1947 to serve in the Indian army. He was an enthusiastic ornithologist contributing to a book on the birds of Delhi. An important Association copy. A large and heavy book with extra postage charges likely. 195.00

Albany: The University of the State of New York, 1910,1914. New York State Museum Memoir 12, in two volumes. Volume I, Water Birds and Game Birds, 501 pp. + plates 1-42. Volume II, Land Birds, 719 pp.+ plates 43-106. 29.5 x 23.5 cm. The illustrator is Louis Agassiz Fuertes, and the plates are in colour and are most attractive. Chapters include Avifauna, Life Zones, Migration, Spring Arrivals, Published Lists, Classification, Genera and Species, Ecology, Economic Value, Laws, Refuges, and Preserves. The dark green boards show a little shelfwear but the volumes are tight and sound. Gilt spine titles are faded. These two volumes are extremely heavy, together weighing 10 kilos, which has serious postage charge implications. There are exhaustive descriptions of the Observatory, transport, accommodation, etc, etc. 5.00

Pages 11, 13, and 15 are detachable Bankers' Orders, and page 11 has been neatly detached at the perforations. 5.00

13615. The Public Museums Liverpool: Handbook and Guide to the British Birds on Exhibition in The Lord Derby Natural History Museum, Liverpool.

Liverpool: The Public Museums Liverpool third edition 1932. 87 pp. 12 photographic plates, paper covers, showing a little wear but overall good. Liverpool pioneered the design and construction of habitat groups, as early as 1865. This is an interesting publication for museum display techniques. Liverpool museums were heavily damaged in the blitz which makes pre-war catalogues useful historically. 15.00
